Happy Flag Day in the Philippines! Here is their flag:

Yes. I approve of this flag. It’s just so darn happy. Bright colors! Shiny things! Sparkles! Sun and stars! A triangle! Two weird sort of rhombus things with the one strange side!

Their national motto is “For God, For People, For Nature and For Country.” Which basically means, I think: “Our Country: Fourth Place.”

And on this date in 1930, the Chrysler Building opened. It would immediately become important as an example of shininess against which all other shiny things ought to be measured.

1929: “Design the Philippines a flag, and make it shiny!”
         “How shiny?”
         “I DON’T KNOW!”

1930: “Design the Philippines a flag, and make it shiny like the top of the Chrysler Building!”
         “I know exactly what to aim for now! Neat-o!”
         “Hooray!”
         (party sounds)

And that’s how it happened. Yup.
