On this date in 1871, there was a terrible hurricane in Labrador. Now that was either one tiny hurricane, or one enormous dog.

On this date in 1942, the United States opened the Office of War Information, an office which had the sole purpose of providing information about the war. Oh. So it’s not just a clever name. Here are some sample bulletins sent out by the OWI (OWI!) over the course of the war:
1942: Everything’s going really splendidly well! We’re winning! Stop using metal, we need it! Bye!
1943: Everything’s hunky-dory! We’re doing great! And winning! Stop eating butter, plant a garden, and buy some bonds! Also, if you haven’t joined up yet, you should! Good job!
1944: This is the best war yet! We found Private Ryan! Stop what you’re doing and make more bullets! We’re winning! Also there’s no more coffee! See ya! But wait seriously MAKE MORE BULLETS!
1945: We won! You can use butter again! If you want to! Get a Chevy and start breeding! See you in Korea!
